folded corners

preservation and care of our memories is something we learn since childhood. are we taught it the right way? Is there one?
Still Life with Books, attributed to William Notman

No one told me that bookmarks existed.
I had been folding the corners of these pages for so long.

No one told me I could highlight these lines
With such bright and beautiful colours.
I had been folding the corners of these pages for so long.

that I didn’t have to go through those long and dull parts
to find those lines that resonated,
*lines, I had now forgotten passages, I now missed.

I ruined my books with these folded corners and the torn pages,
cause I had been folding these pages for so long,
cause no one taught me how to care
and I was taught so wrong.
